The Americans in STEEL ASSASSIN join the club of the veteran bands that do not carry it too far with their discographies before or after their reunion. They have always taken their inspiration from the history and this time they devote their album to the World War II. The guitar player Kevin Curran is the only original member, who was a part of the band in 1982. He sees this album as conceptual but it is more a collection of songs devoted to definite events from this mass slaughter.
Sirens over London unlock the first track and the album. This classic heavy metal with many choruses takes us back to the early 80s. Traditionally for the band the double guitar attacks have an rather aggressive timbre, which distinguishes them from the guitars of JUDAS PRIEST. They emphasize on this analogue signal sound with a little rising of the middle frequencies, which brings back the memory of tapes recorded at home. Even the quiet moments of mostly middle tempo songs are full of modulations.
High Roller Records have a taste for this type of classics. But we cannot declare that the sound is bad – it’s otherwise - too good. The vocals of John Falzone are clear and have similarities to the voice of James Rivera (HELSTAR, DESTINY’S END and more). Because of the serious lyrics the male rock ‘n’ roll timbre from the previous album “War of the Eight Saints” is hidden and we cannot find it here. There is a little bit art rock both in the music and in the singing, which is typical for the English bands. At the end this tendency bursts out in a cover song of RUSH.
The retrospective heavy metal of STEEL ASSASSIN is catchy, and not only for the maniacs. Besides the choruses and the melodies it includes aggressive guitars and a mature conception. Even without changes the band has grown up in its own way. The flow of the NWOBHM continues!
