ARGUS is a traditional heavy-doom metal band hailing from Pennsylvnania/USA that got formed in 2005 and released two albums so far. I didn't know them so far and this album is my first experience with them. I can say that my first impressions when listening to the first songs were really positive and after several listenings this feeling didn't disappear at all, it even went stronger & stronger. ARGUS play traditional heavy-doom metal and the style could be defined as a mix of Candlemass, Solitude Aeternus, Cathedral, Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus and it is never boring but always catchy ! They really do not sound like all those modern doom bands that always play slower & slower to the point of getting boring. The songs are all very rich and varied, mixing slow with fast parts, mournful with raging atmospheres, always really well arranged with subtil breaks & tempo-changes. It would be unfair not to mention the great performance of vocalist Butch Balich (ex-Penance) which really impressed me ! This guy always sings clearly (I feel so bored of those "singers" grunting/growling) and really varies the vocal lines according to the moods of the songs, he brings expression of power, rage, despair, sadness & frustration with ease ! This is an album that I definitely recommend to all into QUALITY heavy-doom metal and also to those who are not familiar with the style 'cos this "Boldly Stride The Doom" can't definitely be a bad introduction to what heavy-doom metal is !
