Altona is a progressive metal group with strong oriental influences; this can maybe be explained by the fact that the group is Turkish. “Altona” the first album of the group is as a whole rather satisfying. The oriental sonorities can be find is the rhythmics and in the guitars riffs. There are lots of rhythm changes in the tracks as especially in “Eternal Depth”. I admit that the oriental side goes pretty well with the compositions and brings a different and original touch from what we can usually find in the genre. The tracks have complex parts with complex and progressive structures especially on the guitars level but also from the keyboards, even if I find them relatively discreet on some tracks. Vahdang Makaletia’s voice is a little different, with oriental tones; his voice is powerful and melodic at the same time.
At the end it is a good album with some little imperfections on the production level and in the sound, but which, I find should satisfied the progressive metal fans who are in search of a somehow different music. At least this album lets me a good impression and I am waiting to see what will do the group in the future.
