Uli Jon Roth will release in a few days his new album “Under A Dark Sky ». As usual the album will please some and others one the contrary will hate it… I’m a part of the first… I’m a huge fan of Uli Jon Roth and of his neo classical style with great symphonic influences. As usual a great work in composition is done and the arrangements are skilfully find and worked. As on his previous albums, the guitarist is surrounded with his Sky Orchestra. The album is more than one hour length … an hour of musical happiness. Sure on this album, Uli’s guitars is more discreet than on the previous ones, it is rather drown under the symphonic arrangements and orchestrations. Several listenings are needed to apprehend all the dimension of the tracks as they are rich on the arrangements and orchestrations levels but not only … As well all along the tracks we have numerous lyric vocalists (tenor, alto, baritone, soprano, bass) who come and sing and even Uli himself sings (I persist to say once more that he should avoid to sing… besides all the respect that I have for him…). We just can bow in front of all his guitarist and composer talents because all is control and in feeling. We have epic passages, others where the keyboards flight in melodic and atmospheric layers and which make us travelling into Uli’s neo classic world. The track « The Magic Word » has some oriental accents in the vocals and in the music. Some tracks or passages are well linked one another but others are rather destabilizing in their conception and melodies like « Letter Of The Law ». the master piece of this opus is very certainly « Tanz In Der Dämmerung », a nearly 19 minute track which goes in intensity and in power, beginning simply at guitars, with changing in rhythms, changing in atmosphere, all in emotion, in feeling. Superb melody and superb composition work which ally technique, feeling and melody.
I cannot be tired of listening this kind of album, captivate by so much wealth and creativity, album that I can only recommend you !!!
Uli Jon Roth is the artist that I would not miss at the Raismes Fest this year, for anything in the world !
