Excellent from the beginning to the end !!! Seventh Wonder gives us with “Mercy Falls” an excellent progressive metal album, on the vocals level as well as on the musical one. It is a much work concept album on the arrangements level, on the orchestrations and the compositions and the melodies ones. The melodies give by the keyboards are very worked and rich with sometimes a symphonic style. The guitars are powerful, very present with very well done playing and the soli are melodic and well at place. It is certain that we are in the front of musicians who control their instruments and who have an undeniable technique whatever the guitarists or the bass player, bass which is very present in the compositions, but also the keyboards which are giving wealth in the orchestrations and the arrangements and the drums knowing to be at place when fastness and power are needed. We have very often harmonies between the guitar and the keyboards, which bring a real plus to the tracks and make them richer. Vocally, Tommy Karevik, has a superb voice, melodic, well at place, which goes pretty well with the tracks, bringing feeling, powerful. An irresistible voice… we also have a lot of chorus present in the tracks which sound rather 80s.
It is a concept album and each of the songs deals with a part of this concept with each one different ambiences and atmospheres, powerful passages, fast, narrative passages having all their importance for the understanding of the story, the soli (keyboards and guitars) and passages full of feeling, changing in rhythms, so we go from a very fast and powerful part to more orchestral parts or simply piano/voice ones, the all of it being very coherent and harmonious. The story is based on the destiny of a little town, the tragedy of a family (the father fells in a coma with an accident) and the nature of the Human Being.
It is an album which needs to be listen several times to apprehend all the wealth and all the musical subtleties but also for the lyrics and believe me it is not a punishment to listen several times this album !!! It is an ambitious album in its conception which is a success on the vocals level as well as on the musical one and I can only recommend it to you because it will keep you in suspense until the end…
