We cannot say that “As The Light Does The Shadow”from Funeral is full of happiness to live… The style of the group is a funeral doom dark and sad. Robert Lowe (Solitude Aeturnus/Candlemass) is invited on this album especially on the track « In The Fanthoms of Wit And Reason » and his powerful vocals are contrasting those of Mats Lerberg and Frode Forsmo. All through the tracks we have these double vocals, which are very often one on the other one but as darkest, sad and monotonous. The vocals intonations are relatively monotonous, clear and nearly religious. The orchestrations of the tracks are rich and complex with the using of real instruments, especially strings. The tracks are melodic, with slow rhythmics and the keyboards are very present and give a dark, melancholic and funeral more pronounced side. I have to admit that one hour of this kind of music it is long, much long … and this album is long and I have the feeling of hearing always the same track (or nearly). The lyrics are dealing with death, of the end, the wanting to die … the Norwegians give us a dark album with worked guitars playing and soli. For the fans of the genre.
