This CD « Sonitus Caeli Ardentis » is a split where we can find two Lithuanian black metal groups, Luctus and Argharus. Luctus, is the solo project of Simonas « Luctus » created in 2001. The influences of the group come from traditional thrash and death and it is certain that you can feel it in the 6 tracks of the group. The compositions are energetic, aggressive, powerful with old school riffs, fast and relatively catchy. The rhythmic section is heavy and efficient with a drummer who seems to have a certain technique. We also find samples in each of the songs. The approached themes of Luctus are war, destruction, patriotism … The tracks are of simple but efficient construction. Luctus gives us all his hatred through his screaming and he does it rather well !
Argharus gives us a blasphematory, misanthropic and nihilist black metal. The vocals are in Lithuanian, and as I do not have any translation, I won’t talk about the lyrics. The style of the group is much more “classic” and not really innovative especially on the riffs level, so much time heard. The drums are powerful and efficient and the tracks well constructed.
I admit that of the two groups it is Luctus which gains my favour because I find the tracks more powerful, more catchy and less “already heard”.
Two young Lithuanian black metal groups to discover if you like the genre.
