Angeldark is a young gothic/symphonic spanish group born from the ashes of the group The Stormrider and “Angélique” is its first album.
“Angélique” is a concept album constructed like a 19th century classic opera, with distinct chapters and tracks which are making evolve the story through different characters.
Angeldark has been surrounded with the Bratislava symphonic orchestra and of its choirs for the symphonic parts and has called Berenice Musa, the soprano from the Spanish group Tears Of Martyr. To say that it is a very great quality album is little to say, it is just simply excellent. The compositions have real, good and complex musical arrangements. The group mixes symphonic, lyric, gothic and metal parts with a disconcerting easiness as the tracks followed one each other with an easiness and an undeniable coherence. All through this album are succeeding metal symphonic passages, gothic, electronic, extreme, the whole influenced by classic music. Besides it is hard to take out one track rather than another one because all are excellent. The powerful and heavy metal passages are following much more classic or symphonic even electro ones like in « Saint Germain (The Man Who Killed Death) Part I. vocally speaking Santi Fano’s vocals are very varied, a powerful voice, strong, well at place which sometimes makes me think to Peter Steele, the Type O Negative’s vocalist. We have excellent male clear vocals, sometimes lyric, growls, female lyric vocals with Berenice, symphonic choirs, to be short sufficiently varied to well represent each of the characters of this “metal opera” because I do think that we could called this album like this. The compositions are well constructed, with well present keyboards and a guitar which know to be powerful when needed. It is certain that to have a symphonic orchestra can only bring a plus to such an album.
The tracks have as a whole dark ambiences and atmospheres.
The album has the benefit of an excellent production.
It is and excellent album that I can only recommend you if you like gothic or symphonic metal, at it is for me a “heart blow” for 2008.
